Immediately after the attack, Iran let it be known that it won’t go unanswered.
“Soleimani’s martyrdom will make Iran more decisive to resist America’s expansionism and to defend our Islamic values. With no doubt, Iran and other freedom-seeking countries in the region will take his revenge,” President Rouhani said in a statement last year, Reuters reported.
On Jan. 7, an arrest warrant was issued by a judge in Iraq for Trump in connection with Soleimani’s killing.
Throughout his term, Trump escalated tensions with Iran by backing out of a nuclear deal intended to curb its enrichment program, and reinstated strict sanctions against the country.
Trump’s successor, Joe Biden, has said that the U.S. will rejoin the Iran nuclear deal if Iran agrees to its previous terms. Shortly after his inauguration, Iran called for action and ‘not just words’ from the new president, the Daily Mail reports.
